Point Cloud Survey and Processing at an MOD Site

Geo Scan captured 15 RGB laser scans at an anonymised MOD site to provide point-cloud data for a crane upgrade. The source dataset contained approximately 1.41 billion points. Cleaning, coincident-point removal, classification and category-specific filtering and sampling produced a dataset of approximately 144 million points, with an estimated RCP file size of 2.9 GB.

The project: point cloud data for a crane upgrade

The project team needed a point cloud of existing conditions to support a crane upgrade. Geo Scan carried out 15 laser scans with RGB values at an MOD site. The precise location is withheld.

Processing a large RGB point cloud

The 15 scans contained approximately 1.41 billion points. Cleaning reduced this to approximately 1.27 billion points; coincident-point removal and 2.5 mm sampling brought it to approximately 480 million points. The data was then classified and sampled by category.

Floor

Approximately 83 million points after classification; 11 million after 7.5 mm sampling.

Ceiling

Approximately 130 million points after classification; 21 million after 7.5 mm sampling.

Roof

Approximately 94 million points after classification; 48 million after 4.0 mm sampling.

Remaining data

Approximately 169 million points after classification; 64 million after 4.5 mm sampling.

The processed point cloud

The filtered and sampled categories totalled approximately 144 million points, with an estimated final RCP file size of 2.9 GB. The point cloud was provided to support the crane upgrade. Site location and project imagery are withheld.
